We updated a website for AGENCY

We have a new website! I have the same feeling now as I do when one of us cleans
the floor in our apartment: this is nice, why didn’t we do this sooner? I guess
we didn’t because we had other, more pressing things to do. In any case, this is
a time for celebration, not for self chastisement.

Aside from the general simplicity of having a static site, one of the key things
we have is a blog. We have a lot of things to share from the making of our game.
I tried sharing some of these things on our bluesky and X (Twitter) accounts but
they are not really the right places for sharing more complicated writeups.

The previous website was built using FastHTML with
thematic inspirations from UIKit and
shadcn/ui. Both of us are comfortable with Python and
it was easy enough to build something quickly with some interactivity. But it
felt slightly clunky when we needed to extend the basic site to include things
like a blog populated with entries written in markdown. We could have done it by
writing more code but we need to focus all our coding efforts on the game.

So we said goodbye to FastHTML and looked at a bunch of static site generators.
Lume seemed easy enough to pick up in a day and flexible
enough to support a variety of website types. We picked the
Tufte theme as the base theme, and
ported our previous site over, making modifications as needed.

I don’t think we are done tweaking the website and we probably won’t ever be
done but for now, we are happy with what we have. It gives us a simpler but
stronger foundation. If we ever need to bring back interactivity to our website,
we can figure it out then. One thing we intentionally omitted with this website
migration is the mailing list. We might bring it back in the future but for now,
the mailing list is halted.
